Automatically logs on the user defined with the REMOTE_USER variable passed from Apache. I wrote it so that we could use Active Directory SSO by authenticating with Kerberos on Apache.

Works great! There is also a version for Confluence available at https://github.com/AngusWarren/remoteuserauth. I am using the plugin successfully with OpenID Connect SSO. The setup consists of an Apache with mod_auth_openidc, which is configured to use a Keycloak instance as OIDC provider.

I used this plugin to get CAS single sign on working with JIRA. Like Apache, CAS also sets the REMOTE_USER header, so the login was transparent. I used javascript in the announcement banner to change the logout URL to our CAS logout URL. The hardest part was determining where to insert the CAS filters in the sea of JIRA filters. The sweet spot was right after the web.xml section designated as "first filters", but before the encoder.

Version 1.1 JIRA Server 4.0 - 7.3.8 Released 2011-08-13

Initial release

This has worked from version 4.0 to 7.1.8 (latest tested version). It's very likely that it will continue working until Atlassian make significant changes to their standard authentication package. If the compatibility matrix isn't up to date that just means I haven't tested it yet.

  1. Download RemoteUserJiraAuth. The app is downloaded as a JAR file.
  2. Shutdown your JIRA instance.
  3. Copy RemoteUserJiraAuth file into your JIRA installation directory under /WEB-INF/lib/.Apps using the Plugins 1 framework can't be installed in Universal Plugin Manager. See our documentation for more information.
  4. Start your JIRA instance.
  5. You're all set!
