How Freeze Mode works
Freeze Mode puts a Jira project into a controlled read-only state for audit, migration, or financial-close windows, then cleanly releases it. It works at Jira's permission layer: a freeze swaps the project's permission scheme for a locked down copy that keeps existing view access but drops every write grant. The same people can still see the project; nobody can change it. Only global Jira admins can freeze or release.
Getting started
- Open Freeze Mode from Jira administration.
- Select one or more company-managed projects.
- Add a reason, and optionally name an exemption group that keeps write access.
- Freeze - each project locks independently.
- Release when the window closes; the original scheme is restored.
Every freeze and release is recorded in a durable, append-only, hash-chained Freeze Log; your audit trail of exactly what was locked, when, and by whom.

- Summary
- Read-only freeze for Jira projects during audits, with a durable audit log
- Details
Initial release of Freeze Mode for Jira.
New in this release:
- Freeze one or more company-managed projects into a controlled read-only state — existing view access is preserved, all write access is removed.
- Batch freeze: each selected project locks independently, so one conflict or error never blocks the rest.
- Global-admin-only control: only holders of Administer Jira can freeze or release, and project admins cannot lift a freeze.
- Optional exemption group: name a pre-existing Jira group that keeps write access during a freeze.
- Clean release: the project's original permission scheme is restored, with a guided recovery path if the scheme changed while frozen.
- Freeze Indicator: an in-context panel tells anyone viewing a frozen issue that the project is locked and who to contact.
- Durable, append-only, hash-chained Freeze Log recording exactly what was locked, when, and by whom.
