It works well to get a word or character count. But only works in published mode. I would like to see it also work in edit mode.

  Correct, as stated in on this marketplace page and in the documentation Confluence does not allow apps like this to work in edit mode. Atlassian has it on their to do list but we have no idea when it might be possible for us to add the ability for word count to work in edit mode.
