Connecting to TeamCity server with context presented in URL (e.g. http://example.com/something/) resulted in an error

You don't need to wait while the plugin communicates with TeamCity to see your pages. Pages are displayed instantly and TeamCity data will appear on them when ready.
When adding or editing TeamCity macros you can just select Application Link, Project or Build Configuration from the list instead of typing them.
